Default Short clip of Oscar training

It was Simba's time to shine last week, but here's a short clip of Oscar yesterday. He's doing really well with his focus and i've been working on changes of direction.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcyzkCslC60

We were also training weaves quite a bit yesterday, but i'm taking my time on these as I know how critical it is to get them really ingrained into his brain! I was also working on his seesaw contacts yesterday, but we didn't get a clip of his runs with seesaw in, he's getting much better though.

I've been working on contacts but I find it breaks his focus if I enforce the 2o/2o too hard so i'm not 100% sure what to do from here, i'm continuing to take him back over if he misses and I have been rewarding him being on contacts regularly so i'm hoping he's getting the message.

Plenty of practice to be done though, he'll be LOTS more consistent before we go in any more shows, but i'm really proud of his improvement in focus and attentiveness

Also, Simba learned the Tyre and long jump yesterday, just took a few clicks to get the message in and she had it, she was brilliant!

Look at that big goofus go! He looks like he has that happy Pointer grin the entire time.

(I was sitting her grinning like a fool watching him, he'll always be one of my favorite dogs!)

That's the face! He so reminds me of Macey. Don't take offense, but I call her a "big dumb oaf". She looks like a box or rocks but she's fairly sharp. Looks can be so deceiving. LOL

Good fun.

Quick advice on contacts - he really doesn't have contact criteria now that he understand. Because of this, they will not hold up over time. Get with a trainer who can teach you how to maintain focus while training contacts. It can be done.

If I can figure out how to get my latest video of Asher (from a friend) into a format I can use, I will show it to you. Tons of focus while in 2o/2o position - trained that way. But running on contacts without criteria the dog fully understands (and 'go hit the yellow" isn't criteria) will not hold up on this dog. He's having way too much fun!

No I don't mind WCL, he is a big oaf, but a very loveable one!

Agility I know what you mean, i'm really struggling with it tbh as whilst I did have some other lessons they weren't able to be regular enough to really practice and get it solid, though i've been trying to put some of the things I learned into what i'm doing now. The problem I have is that he can be a bit like a cannonball bowling down the equipment and he struggles to stop so i'm not sure how to get that sorted. I realise i've made this issue for myself by not setting that in stone from the beginning, but I really never expected him to be any kind of 'good' at it! I won't make the same mistakes with weaves etc, i'm really trying hard to be slow teaching it and make sure he has firm ground rules.

Could do with a few more private lessons really to teach me the theory, then be able to use the weekend group to practice on the equipment.

I'm not going to make the same mistake with Simba, but then she's a lot more measured with what she does.

We always make mistakes with our first agility dogs, so don't get too down on yourself.

Do get more privates with that other trainer to get the concepts down further. You can control the cannonball with the right information.

Yeah it's not the end of the world and i'm sure i'll get him past it. What I have taken from the private lessons is a bit on how to turn him etc, and she also gave me some great tips on winding him up at the start line (which is why I talk into his ear and turn his head forward, which has REALLY helped rather than enforcing a sit/wait which gives him time to look around)

We'll get there eventually, and you're right, when I train another one I will know where to start! Now Simba's getting more active with agility i'm making sure she learns her contacts properly.

If he's never a competitive dog it's not a problem, I went into training this purely to find something active to get him working with me and i've achieved that, the thought of competition never entered my head until I realised that he actually has a bit of potential.

Will try and get some more lessons when I can, she's just off competing most weekends that it's hard to pin it down.
