Default Agility Debut

Day one at Ash's first agility trial went well. I call it a success. And so does my trainer and my training buddies. First some pics...

Ash before hand, "Mom! Can we just get running already?"

A cute view from my booth.

Now for the Vids-- this is our JWW run at preferred height.

He did well, the connection was there and he did not peel for the tunnel. He read my cues wonderfully. We ran into a little trouble with the weaves, but a quick restart there fixed that. Driving down the final line I pulled him a little too hard and we dropped a bar. In excitement, I lifted my hand at jump 15 and accidentally sent him off and around it... when I pulled him back he backjumped. Well--I TOLD him too. Heh! The bar meant we NQ'd anyway. I got a great feel for him outside trialing, and he clearly had fun!

We came sooooo close to getting a Q here! I trusted a lead out on a start line and he was there. He followed me through the tight front cross and did a marvelous job on the teeter! Coming into the weaves we ran into trouble again... on the third shot he ALMOST got it! But he looked up at Dad behind the camera and missed the last pole. I will work on keeping his focus better as we almost missed the tunnel. OOPS! Around the rest of the course he was great! But we did have a little chuckle when he thought the Dog Walk was a teeter! You can see it in his tail that he's confused, waiting for it to drop. Once he realized what he was on he moved along fine. Tomorrow I bet he'll zip right up without hesitation.

Very proud of him!

Good work!! I hope you both had fun as that's you only goal for now. He runs and looks a bit like Ooley - a BC owned by a friend of mine who passed away (the friend, not the dog). Great contacts btw. And worked and held well for a novice competitor. They were very beautiful first runs.

We did have a lot of fun, looking forward to tomorrow. I think his tail tells that story well. When we left the ring he got a lot of rubbing and sweet-talking. He was there, he did what I told him (even when I sent him the wrong way--THAT was good.) So now that I know where we're at tomorrow I can hopefully adjust my support for him in the directions he needs it. I noticed he was a little slower on the field than when in practice--he's thinking things through a bit on the course. Green dog issues, but even with that he was great.

Some of the people I train with who run higher level dogs gave me some great remarks on how I handled him today. One of these people RARELY gives out compliments and she told me I was smoother than many that were out there today. My trainer saw our first run and her first remark (with a big old smile on her face) was "Why did you let him backjump?!" I grinned back and replied, "Poor collection on my part. We'll get it next time." Should've seen how proud she was with my reply.

Day 2: gorgeous weather!

Someone woke up under the right side of the bed!

What a ham!

JWW, NP, first run of the day--video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K412u_x_GO8
Sooooooo close! But one knocked bar away. It doesn't show in the video, but the bar on 14 (blue jump) fell. I heard it go. I took the turn a little too tight for him. I know after 5 my front cross was sloppy and shallow, cutting him off which was why he crossed behind me. This time I collected him better!

STD, NP, 2nd run of the day--video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFy8W1Enqrc
Hellllloooooooooo groove! We got it. Only trouble spot was the weave entrance (he wants to take the wrong side, we'll work on that). The rest felt great! Our pacing matched, my crosses were smoother and better placed, his attention remained on me, bottoms were good. It felt like very little pressure was on us as I knew he would be there and I just watched to be sure I was supporting enough. How well did we do? Hehe... ready?

How about 100 point clean run , 21 seconds under time and a 1st place among 4 qualifiers in our class. I could not be prouder of my boy! He clearly enjoyed his time out there, we have found our rhythm out there and just need to keep it now, polish and tweeking with practice and training. (oh, and reviewing the difference between the teeter and the dog walk Once more he was a waiting for the walk to tip, we can fix that.)

Ohhh. I love your contacts. Grats on the great runs!! Boy Draco reminds me of Ooley. It makes me nostalgic to watch him and makes me miss Ooley and Laura. BTW, Ooley is MACH Ooley.

Alice is a stickler for solid, PATIENT contacts. She told me she'd beat me with Ash's leash if she didn't hear me telling him "Goooooood boy!" on his bottoms. Sooo, I made sure I had a little conversation with him each time.

Ash is 6 years old, I think his age helps me out a little in how he's learned and handled. He is a bit of a twitch dog, but it keeps me mindful of every part of my body. I realized something last night... we started our first agility class 10/14/2009. In less than a year we had a very nice debut.

Congradulations! Again, wonderful videos. It looks like your hard work is paying off! I can't wait to see him in action again.
