Cool 2nd RE and RA Legs

Had a great time at the show. Went up to a hotel room the night before, got to the show to find out the judge was late. Well WE were there on time. Ash did great for such a tight course, the dogs were all struggling. The backwards 3 steps ate a lot of us! When Ash turned and crabwalked I made a spur of the moment decision not to redo--I knew it would not get better. We wound up with an 89, 2nd place decided by time 1st was a hair faster--not by much! We lost another point on a hesitation to sit. I was very pleased with this, we'll be working on the back 3 a little more to be sure I give a good cue and he receives it!

Score sheet, we're R79, that's how interesting the runs were!

Parker's run started with a problem... we were approaching the second sign when the judge noticed the jump was at the wrong height. She asked us to stop while they fixed it. Well, wasn't so easy... so I was asked to take Parker back off the course and leash him. Once they had it all set we restarted to no fault. Parker seemed ok with it (well, I DID stuff his mouth with treats right beside his crate while we waited!) Back in the game he did MUCH better this time! We ended up with 96, little points lost over minor things that can be understood. This is more the Parker I am used to! He was still a little flighty, but given the interruption I will forgive that. After all, we took First!

We're R22

You'll have fun. Only focus on him having a blast in the ring and out of it. The rest doesn't matter for many more shows.

That's the idea! We're in Standard and Jumpers With Weaves Preferred heights on both days. My aim is to get him comfortable with the transition of running in a show (not practice/class). I hope to get one Q out of our four runs (ideal is more! But I'm aiming low to avoid ME from putting too much pressure on him). I have my art booth on the side to chill at inbetween, so he should be nice and relaxed, after all he was with me last year chillin' in the chair.

Draco,

Here's my speech I give my students. First, I suggest BEFORE you go you read up on Lanny Basham's Mental Management for agility information. Go on line and Google him. "Clean Run" ran his Mental Management series a few years ago. It was excellent.

By saying you hope to have one Q out of 4, you've already set a "goal." This isn't good because it's not a real goal. Read Lanny's description of goal vs dream. (And adding the word "hope" in front of it doesn't get you out of the "goal" description).

Second, by saying you hope to have one Q out of 4, you are ALREADY thinking about what happens at the END of the run. Believe me, this is true. You should never be thinking Q. You should be thinking...process. What do you need to do to get Ash around the course. What do YOU need to be doing to make him happy, rested and stress free the entire weekend. What do you need to be doing at each spot on the course to help Ash do his best. What do you need to be DOING. If you focus on that, the Qs will take care of themselves.

Thinking of the Q takes your mind off of the doing. Instead, you're already focused on the finish line.

Believe me, this mental management stuff is IMPORTANT. For the first trials - until you get your Open title and sometimes even through your Masters title - your only real focus is making sure Ash has fun. It isn't competition and it REALLY isn't the Q - at all.

I have seen team after team fail because they do not understand this stuff. I've also had students from the coasts come to me and are amazed at how relaxed and good my students are because we focus on the mental game. In the end, a good mental game improves your Q rate by around 50 percent.

Lanny has a million more things to say. I strongly recommend you check him out, especially if you're going into your first show already saying you hope to get a Q!!!!
