Default Learning flyball on our own?

so I've been watching a ton of flyball videos on youtube...and I have a very good feeling that Jaq would excel at it, and most importantly, love it. unfortunately, the closest flyball team is in Salem, which is 3 1/2 - 4 hours from here, and I'm just not willing to drive that far twice a week for classes, nor can I afford it. I was thinking about trying to learn and teach Jaq on my own, go to some tournaments (to watch), and eventually try and start a team in my area. is that even possible? if it is, how the heck do I go about it (learning, not starting a team)? =P or do I absolutely need to go to classes?
