I agree that the hydrogen peroxide solution is the most effective. It does require that you have hydrogen peroxide on hand. I didn't use to. Now that Zircie has been sprayed 5 times I make sure to always have a full bottle in the bathroom "just in case".

I think the reason that tomato juice and/or vinegar became so widespread as remedies is that acid helps break down the oil. The most common safe acids that people were likely to have on hand were those two. So it qualifies as "better then nothing" and certainly is better than shampoo. I should point out that when I do the final shampoo it is more so to get out the chemicals which I have introduced than to cover up the stink with the more pleasant smell of the shampoo.
