Default How to: Shampoo skunk spray off your dog.

If your dogs are like mine they just have to see what a Skunk is. Even when the Skunk has warned them they still proceed with checking it out.

Skunks give clear warnings if it feels threatened, it will stamp its front feet, arch its back, and shuffle away. If your dog still doesn't take heed it will turn its posterior toward the dog, raise the tail, and release the smelly musk ( smells like burnt rubber and garlic to me ), a sulfur-alcohol compound, from special glands near the anus. This spray not only stinks it burns and it can cause temporary blindness if the spray hits the eyes.

Things that do not work well for removal of Skunk Spray:

*Bath in tomato juice
*Spray with lemon or orange citrus
*Masking agents like perfume or Fabreze

This recipe does work and I can tell you from personal expereince it works like a charm and removed all trace of the smell:

*1 quart ( 1 litre ) 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
*1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
*1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent

Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.
Rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.
For spray in the eyes, flush with water as soon as possible.
