Having one of my dogs escape is one of my worst fears. I obsessively check the gate every time before I let them out, but there is a lot of traffic in my area and that scares me as much as them getting loose. I’m not sure they would ever find their way home even if they could do so safely. I’m glad yours were safely waiting at home for you.
